STEAM Academy Youth Programs

For nearly a decade, Indiana Tech’s popular summer camps have introduced hundreds of middle school and high school students to the exciting world of engineering, computer science and technology.

Thanks to a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., Indiana Tech is pleased to announce the creation of the STEAM Academy youth program—a home for expanded and new camp offerings for K-12 students and a variety of after-school programs.

The mission of our STEAM Academy is to provide collaborative, robust and forward-looking youth programming that will give students hands-on, experiential learning opportunities to nurture their academic and creative strengths in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM).

After School Programs

The fees vary for each after-school program. To ensure all programs are accessible and affordable, Indiana Tech will provide 10 percent of participants in each program with a 50 percent need-based scholarship.

Indiana Tech Explorer Post #2829

Meets: 6:30-8:30 p.m., every other Wednesday, beginning Aug. 24

This program, a subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America, is open to boys and girls from grades 7 through 12. The yearlong after-school program teaches students about the development of software, electronics and the overall construction of robots. Its primary focus is to prepare entries for the annual National Robotics Challenge (NRC). Since the post’s inception at Indiana Tech in 1995, it has won nearly 200 awards, including 54 gold awards and 11 Honda Innovation Award nominations.

Coming Fall of 0223

This program, a subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America, is open to middle school boys and girls from grades 6 through 8. It gives kids an opportunity to explore careers and discover possibilities for their future in STEAM fields. They will participate in hands-on activities and receive mentorship from highly qualified university faculty, all in a safe and professional learning environment. Students will meet every other week for two hours of fun and intentional community-based learning on Indiana Tech’s campus.

Site: In the Seitz Conference Center, second floor of Andorfer Commons on the Indiana Tech campus. Use Entrance 2 to enter campus at the intersection of East Washington Boulevard and Schick Street. Turn left into the parking lot, which is adjacent to Andorfer Commons.

Girls TECH Takeover

Coming Fall of 0223

This yearlong, after-school program will empower and motivate young ladies to pursue careers in science and technology. Participants will be mentored by Indiana Tech students who are pursuing STEM majors. They will learn computer programming skills that will impact their community and allow them to join a sisterhood of supportive peers and role models. Girls TECH Takeover will expand current Girls Who Code club activities to be more cohesive and integrated with new programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, HTML and SQTC.

Kids Robotics Academy

During this yearlong, after-school program, students K-12 will design and build robots. This skill set is becoming increasingly important, especially in the era of Industry 5.0 where robots and humans working together in the workplace is becoming more commonplace. Participants will learn how to design, build and program robots, based on rules and regulations. Kids 5 Robotics Academy programming is structured with engineering disciplines to challenge students of all grade levels to reach their full potential and improve their critical thinking skills, communication skills, teamwork and programming skills.

Elementary students: Will become familiar with LEGO WeDo and EV3 platforms

Middle school students: Will become familiar with Arduino, Raspberry Pi and 3D printing for robot construction

High school students: Will learn to integrate software programming and hardware to achieve more sophisticated tasks and prepare to participate in annual regional robotics competitions, such as the First® Robotics Competition and the Collegiate Robotics Football Conference competition.

High School STEM Camp

Meets: June 19–23

This residential, week-long learning experience is designed to give high school students a hands-on introduction to engineering, computer science, biology and technology—in a fun and memorable way. Campers will learn from and work alongside knowledgeable and experienced professors, and experience all that Indiana Tech’s beautiful campus has to offer. Cost includes all project materials, housing and meals on campus, an adult-sized t-shirt and all camp activities.

Build + Learn Middle School Camp

Meets: 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., or 12-3:30 p.m., June 12-16

Build something great and learn something new! This is an engaging, hands-on experience for middle school students to explore science, engineering, math and technology. During this week-long half-day camp, participants will conduct experiments; design, construct and test structures; use computer-aided drawing software; and explore labs on campus. Cost includes all project materials, snacks, lunch on campus, an adult-sized t-shirt and all camp activities.

Cyber Patriot Summer Camp

Meets: June 26-30

Through in-depth teaching and hands-on application, high school students are immersed in a cyberspace experience designed to introduce them to exciting career opportunities in cybersecurity. They will be trained on cybersecurity-related operations throughout the week-long day camp. The experience will culminate on Friday when participants protect and defend their network and systems during a simulated cyber event. Cost includes all project materials, snacks and meals on campus, an adult-sized t-shirt and all camp activities.

Creative Expression and Communication Camp

Meets: July 10-14

This week-long day camp is designed to spark curiosity and cultivate creativity as participants explore the technology used in creative careers. Students aged 12 to 17, will learn new skills through activities like live broadcasting, multimedia journalism, creative writing, esports and strategic marketing. The camp will be facilitated by Indiana Tech faculty and industry professionals who work in the Fort Wayne community. Cost includes all project materials, snacks and lunches on campus and an adult-sized t-shirt.

Investigative Science Camp

Meets: July 17-23

Investigative Science Camp is a week-long day camp where high school students explore multiple disciplines and career paths that are built on scientific foundations. Participants will become junior scientists and will be challenged to use their imaginations in new ways. They will choose between various hands-on activities that will increase their knowledge in environmental, physical and behavioral sciences, chemistry, and sciences related to criminal justice. The camp will be facilitated by Indiana Tech faculty. Cost includes all project materials, breakfast and lunch on campus, snacks, an adult-sized t-shirt and all camp activities.
