Newest art exhibit at Indiana Tech celebrates the afro
February 6, 2017“Afros: A Celebration of Natural Hair by Michael July,” an exhibit of contemporary photography, is now on display in Indiana Tech’s Franco D’Agostino Art Gallery. The collection, which is part of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art’s traveling exhibition series, will be in the D’Agostino Gallery through April 14. It’s the second of four FWMoA collections Indiana Tech will be showcasing through 2017.
This contemporary photography exhibit documents the rising popularity of natural hair styles, especially the afro, by Brooklyn photographer and author Michael July.
July launched the initial project on kickstarter.com, raising more than $20,000 to print and distribute a 450-page coffee table book chronicling the evolution of the afro in America. The original photographs are traveling the country with much public and critical acclaim.
Over five years, July approached a variety of individuals from across the country and asked them to participate as subject models for his book. He was able to capture the crème de la crème of afros as worn by people of virtually every shade, ethnicity, country and age group. This exhibition shows pictorially the power, beauty and glorious nature of the afro.
All are welcome to view “Afros: A Celebration of Natural Hair by Michael July,” from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. in the D’Agostino Art Gallery, which is located in Indiana Tech’s Academic Center.
