Verification

Each year, a portion of Indiana Tech’s financial aid student population is selected for a process called verification. This requires our office to request additional information (including but not limited to: Household size, tax return transcripts and W-2 forms) from the student and their parent, unless the student is classified as independent by Federal Student Aid.

If you are selected for verification, it does not mean that you have done something wrong or that there is a problem with your FAFSA. Verification is a normal part of the financial aid process and is required of our office by Federal Student Aid and the U.S. Department of Education. This process is intended to improve the accuracy of information submitted on the FAFSA and ensure accurate awarding of federal student aid funds.

For more information on verification and specific instructions on the process, please first determine whether you are a dependent or an independent student.

Dependent Students

A dependent student is younger than 24 years old, is unmarried and pursuing an undergraduate degree. They are not a veteran or member of the armed forces, an orphan or a ward of the court. They do not have legal dependents. A dependent student is not an emancipated minor or someone who is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Independent Students

An independent student is at least 24 years old, may be married and pursuing a degree at any level (undergraduate, graduate or doctoral). An independent student may be a veteran or member of the armed forces. They may also be an orphan or ward of the court. An independent student may have legal dependents other than a spouse. They may also be an emancipated minor or someone who is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
