Abby Miller – Reflection 1

Our day at the Civil Rights Museum reminded me of the importance of feeding a belief in something higher than myself. It’s too easy to get stuck in a mundane and negative mindset, forgetting that there is a higher moral ground to strive for. There is a reason why not everyone stands up for what is right. It takes perseverance to continue believing in a seemingly impossible goal, and I was brought back to reality by the reminder that change is made by the people who persevere toward accomplishing their goals.

I was reminded of an Ernest Hemingway quote today: “If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.”
